DO NOT CAMPAIGN BASED ON ETHNOCENTRIC SENTIMENT

As GE14 draws near, we observe a growing unhealthy trend of political parties campaigning based on ethnocentric sentiment. Such conduct is unwise, unhealthy and divisive. Malaysia has just celebrated its 60th Independence and we must not allow divisive politicking to cause ill to our hard earned national harmony, and cut wider the already unhealthy ethnic animosity. We urge all political parties to campaign on national and local issues by all means, but do not be a political scum to cause a time reversal of our nation building. Likewise any politician or political party that campaign or insinuates for a state/territory secession need be severely criticized.

We, in Paersatuan Patriot Kebangsaan, comprising veterans from the military and police take pride in having served our King and country, and had helped bring peace to our beloved nation. Many among us had risked our lives fighting our nation’s enemies and worked in very challenging, hazardous and life threatening situations. The peace and national harmony we enjoy today did not come easy. Peace and national harmony have to be cherished and treasured, and we will not sit easy to watch any individual, group or party destroy them.

One of the objectives of our Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan is to help strive for a Malaysian unity among all ethnic groups. We feel the need for a Malaysian unity to be more urgent than ever, especially in the looming world economic uncertainty ahead. Malaysian people must be united as one to face the many expectant challenges.

In the months ahead we will be engaging other NGOs, institutions, government bodies and political parties to work towards the goal of achieving national harmony.

PERSATUAN PATRIOT KEBANGSAAN – KENYATAAN MEDIA – 8HB MAC 2017

KENYATAAN MEDIA

8hb MAC 2017

PERBINCANGAN

PERKARA PERTAMA –ISU BERSANGKUTAN PVATM

Penyampai:   Brig Jen Dato Mohamed Arshad Raji (Bersara)

THE WAY FORWARD FOR PERSATUAN PATRIOT KEBANGSAAN

(A closing speech delivered by the President, Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan at the Inaugural Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 20th August at Royal Selangor Club)

Ladies and Gentleman

Let me reiterate that the nature of our business i.e. something that we know best is defence and security and issues related to it. If our country is to prosper and progress, these two elements i.e. defence and security must prevail and cannot be compromised.

We will be keeping a close tab on such issues, and we will make a representation to the authorities, if we believe that our views need to be heard. If we are called to participate in any governmental forum that is organized for the purpose of soliciting ideas for the formulation of national defence and security related policies, then we will make our presence. But I have my reservation that our association will be called to participate in such formal governmental forums, because as an association of retirees; nobody would want to listen to us. That is the reality and the sad fate of people like us who are deemed obsolescence. So what must we do……..keep quite? No……we will make ourselves heard for good reasons, and I think in some way, our voice is beginning to be heard, though not forceful enough.

I still believe there are many among us despite our age are still active and can contribute ideas through the pen. For me this is the most powerful instrument to disseminate ideas, and as the saying goes i.e. the pen is mightier than the sword. But one has to be extra cautious when one writes so as not to be trap into writing something that is defamatory in nature.

Ladies and Gentlemen

That said, what therefore is our vision statement?

‘To seek a Malaysian nation where every citizen regardless of race and religion is saved from the follies of the nation’s leaders and administrators, in order to return the nation to its past glory’

Be that as our vision, we can now look at issue that we can voiced out, but not necessarily issues related to defence and security only. As of now, I can list down several issues:

One – To reinstate Hari Pahlawan (Warriors Day) that is celebrated on 31 July each year. I wasn’t aware that Hari Pahlawan is no longer celebrated, and for this year it was replaced by the Hari Perhimpunan Raksaksa Veteran ATM held on 31 July this year. I think the organizers have failed to realize the historical significance of Hari Pahlawan that was to remember and honour our dead heroes and those security forces veterans that had contributed their lives during WW2, the first Malayan Emergency, Indonesian Confrontation and the Communist Insurgency. It is not just a military affair, but an affair that involves the security forces i.e. military and police and all other related security agencies of the government.

Two – We support to keep active the RMAF Team of retired officers efforts at seeking the support of the current Armed Forces leadership, to recognize the supremacy of the Armed Forces Council in managing the Armed Forces, as eloquently presented by Mej Mior just now. This is an issue that may have been violated and abused by the powers that be, by ignoring the supremacy of the Armed Forces Council as granted for by the Federal Constitution.

Three – We support the effort of the ‘Mohicans’ to redeem the lost pride and status of officers of the Armed Forces as duly explained by Kapt Tengku Zainal. It was a long and tedious effort by Kapt Tengku Zainal to challenge the government through a legal process that took him almost 40 years.

Four – We demand political parties not to raise controversial issues of race and religion, and directing such issues at other races that will cause fear, mistrust and disunity. Religion is to unite and not to break up societies. In the eyes of our creator, all races are deemed equal. There is no one race that is superior. It is having the false sense that I am superior to you that is breaking up societies and creating mistrust.

Five – We seek the government to relook into the declaration of the Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality (ZOPFAN) signed by all Foreign Ministers of ASEAN in 1971 in Kuala Lumpur. The declaration states explicitly that South East Asia is “free from any form or manner or interference by outside powers, and to make efforts to broaden areas of cooperation among ASEAN member nation”. I fear that what the government does today contravenes the spirit of ZOPFAN. This is a heavy subject that needs to be brainstormed.

Six – We seek the government to cease talking about political issues that are not beneficial to the ordinary citizen, but to concentrate more on economic and social issues that are causing uneasiness and restraining the general public. The main issue today is the ballooning national debt, and how this will affect the citizens for now and the future. This isn’t clearly explained.

Seven – With the General Election drawing near, political parties from both the political divide not to indulge in racial and religious issues during campaigning for the purpose of winning voter support.

Eight – We will bring back the pride of our uniforms that we once wore by telling the ruling political leaders that the uniforms are only meant to be worn by serving military and police officers. Do you see the US President being the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces wearing a General’s uniform when he visits troops? Have you seen the British PM wearing a military uniform when taking a salute at a military parade? If we are not careful, we will one day see the PM and Defence Minister wearing a General’s uniform at National Day Parade in the presence of the King.

Nine – To demand UMNO and MCA to make a stand on the party to party relation with the Communist Party of China. If both the parties can have a party to party relation with a communist party, then other political parties can also establish relations with the Russian Communist Party or the defunct Malayan Communist Party.

For a start, we will concentrate on the issues that I had presented and to seek ways to move forward with the issues. I do not at this point in time want to discuss the form that we should take to trash out the issues that I had presented. It need detailed deliberation and I would like it to be handled by the Association’s Main Committee, and any decision made regarding the way to move forward the issues will be disseminated down to all of you.

I sense there is already much that needs to be done, but I am pretty confident that all of you will be able to contribute in whatever way you can towards the success of our Persatuan. The priority now is to build up membership and to make known our brand.

Finally, what will be the Persatuan say ten years from today is not known. Will it still exist, or will as someone has suggested to me, to bloom into a new political party. That I will leave that to the Persatuan and its members at the time to decide when that ten year period is up.

ANAK MUDA BANGSA MELAYU KU

UNIFORM GALORE AND HAND KISSING

There seem to be a craze among ministers, particularly those who holds the appointment as the Defence Minister and Deputy Defence Minister to adorn the military uniform at organised military functions. Why is there the need for such a minister to adorn the military uniform when he isn’t a military person? Or is it his rightful duty as the Defence Minister and the Deputy Defence Minsiter to be dressed in military uniform when attending organized military activity, such as a parade, witnessing military exercises or visiting military bases?

If one were to look at the practices of the Defence Ministers of the Commonwealth countries, one will notice that the scene of the Defence Minister, or even the Prime Minister wearing a military uniform at military function is not visible at all. This isn’t the case in Malaysia. Take the case of the US President where by virture of his appointment is also the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. But do you see him wearing a General’s uniform when he reviews parades; does a tour at military bases and visits troops in combat? Certainly not that I have seen?

We even had a minister who had undergone basic military training as a volunteer gets promoted to the rank of Brigadier General without going to the various stages in rank, whereas regular military officers takes years of courses and training to get to that rank.

Malaysia has some unusual practices where a minister is not only a minister, but also thinks that as a minister, he is also the boss of a ministry and including all departments within the ministry.

Take the Defence Ministry for instance. There have been a number of occasions where statements made by the minister sounded very much like he is issuing out orders to a subordinate military commander. He also talks about the deployment of military assets and resources, and that certainly isn’t his responsibility to talk about. I wonder if the military commanders took notice of this and caution the minister to understand the limits of what he can say and cannot say, especially on matters relating to operations.

The next issue is about hand kissing of ministers hands by senior police officers. To this, there have been a number of photos that went viral on Whatsapp showing senior police officers kissing the hands of a minister and also the Prime Minister. I find this unusual and funny. I do not know whether this practice is permissible in the police force and has been taught during training. Certainly, I say that such a practice is unusual, and is certainly not the practice in other police forces of the world; certainly not among the police forces of the Commonwealth.

My only hope is to see that this practice of kissing the hands of ministers and other ‘big shot’ does not become the habit of senior military officers. We salute, and that is the only way we know to accord respect to people who deserve to be given the salute.

KEMANA HILANGNYA ACARA HARI PAHLAWAN?

Fikir fikirkan lah.

ARE WE AN ALLY OF CHINA OR THE US?

Questions has been raised by many as to what can be the reason(s) for the US President Donald Trump to have so much interest in PM Najib, for the latter to be invited to the White House this September 12th 2017. It is inconceivable that Trump isn’t aware of the development in the SEA Asian region, especially in the area of defence and security, where the US has much interest in region.  It is inconceivable too that Trump isn’t aware of all that is happening to our nation today, a nation that was once being referred to as a fast developing nation; the Asian Tiger they say, outlasting most other nations in the ASEAN region.

Trump, during his Presidential Election campaign has voiced distrust in Muslims and the Muslim world, but that has changed somewhat upon being elected President, when he made an official visit to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Like all leaders of the world, official visits are meant to foster closer relationship among countries, especially when a country’s leader has just taken over the leadership of his country.  Such unexpected and sudden change of attitude by Trump towards Muslims would come as a surprise to any leader of the Muslim world, but I suppose this isn’t the case for Saudi Arabia where   there has been a long standing relation with the US government, especially on matters of defence and security, and where the US has been one of the major supplier of defence equipment to the kingdom.

In the case of Malaysia, would you not think that the invitation to PM Najib to the White House has anything to do with enticing Najib to remain a close ally of the US in the SEA Asian region, since PM Najib has probably been seen by the US to have developed the strengthening of bilateral relations with China? Or would you think there will be offers made by Trump to ease the financial and debt burden of the Najib’s regime, and all other burdens as a measure to curb the unstoppable economic and security influence of China in the SEA region?

Whatever may be the reason(s) for the ‘sudden liking’ of Trump towards Najib, one can expect the issue of 1MDB that had caused a ‘dent’ in the financial and banking system of the US to be raised by Trump. And one can assume that Trump is fully briefed by his officers on the situation surrounding the 1MDB scandal, and how the scandal has affected the US financial and banking system.

One wonders how will Najib response to questions about 1MDB when asked? The US government has noted the serious flaws in its financial and banking system that had allowed laundered money to breach its tough financial and banking system. Likewise, the 1MDB scandal has also affected banks in several other countries, notably Switzerland, Singapore, UK and Hong Kong; countries where it’s banking system are reputed to be some of the best in the world. I don’t think Najib can turn and twist his answers anymore about 1MDB when questions are asked about it; not only questions by Trump but also by the US media. Certainly, Raja Petra Kamaruddin of Malaysia Today will not be around to respond positively in Najib’s favour to questions asked by the US media. Also, Najib can no longer claim that the RM2.6 billion that got into his personal bank account was a donation from a super rich Pak Arab, because investigations by the US Department of Justice prove otherwise.

The other question that Trump could probably ask Najib is relating to Malaysia’s seemingly preferential treatment towards China for financial support to develop several large scale projects that runs into billions of ringgit, seen by many as projects that are beyond the government’s affordability for the present. There has also been an announcement that some China manufactured defence equipments are being considered by the Malaysian government. Whether the purchases are based on a need basis or otherwise are left much to the desires of the nation’s defence Chiefs. But one would have noticed that a sudden shift in Malaysia’s seemingly preference towards China’s defence equipment against traditional western defence equipment is rather unusual. Can this be tied to the large scale development projects offered to China companies that are also heavily financed by them? Or was the government being ‘armed twisted’ to accept the defence sale deals as part of the large scale multi billion ringgit projects offered and wholly financed by the China companies?

I think the US government is fully aware of the consequence(s) of China’s sudden emergence as a major financier in the economic development of Malaysia, especially in the construction of two major ports in the Peninsular i.e. Kuantan (eastern port) and Malacca (western port) where it was said to have the potential to serve as a naval port facility.

How will PM Najib answer to the above questions that will probably be raised by Trump himself or by the US media will be much awaited by Malaysians? Will Najib take a pro US stance and continue to be seen as a US ally in the region and conversely risk losing China’s financial support, or adopt a pro China’s stance and in all probability lose the US as the country’s ally. Whatever position that Najib takes will have an adverse impact on the country’s stated foreign policy towards the US and China.

PATRIOT WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS

Dear Members of Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan,

I am deeply honoured and truly inspired by your presence at the inaugural AGM held on 20th August at the Royal Selangor Club, Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. To the new members that had registered that day; we welcome you to the association. I would also like to thank those who had made their cash contribution, for that has helped us to pay off our bills to the Royal Selangor Club.

For the moment we may be small in numbers, though not small in our will and spirit to succeed. But I do believe we will grow when we are able to establish a ‘brand’ for ourselves; and that brand will be reflected in the multi racial composition of our association i.e. a truly Malaysian brand.

There will be many things that need to be done henceforth. For all that we intend doing, it will involve costs. For this, I would like to appeal to all of you to assist in strengthening the association’s financial prowess by way of making a personal donation, or to get friends to contribute towards the association. Rather than ‘throwing’ excess cash into the ‘trash can’, you and your friends might as well throw the excess cash into Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan’s Maybank Account No: 562209645430

Thank you.

PERSATUAN PATRIOT KEBANGSAAN – A MISCONCEPTION?

Over the last two days, I have been receiving many congratulatory messages relating to the establishment of the Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan and its inaugural AGM held on Sunday 20th August, from friends via Facebook, phone messages and emails. I am truly honoured and encouraged by their words of support that gives me the motivation to serve the association even more. However, there were also some messages that sounded unsavory, and I think those that had sent such messages have misunderstood the aim and objectives of the association.

There was one comment which alleged the association members, I quote, “they are group of misfits who have a lot of bones to pick sour grapes”, unquote. This comment reportedly came from a senior retired Air Force officer.  Another comment reportedly came from a senior retired Army Officer when he said, I quote, “my reading directly or indirectly this new association is ‘political participation’. These people are more inclined towards opposition right from the beginning”, unquote. Let me say to this two retired military officers that if the comment were aimed at me in person, I don’t really care. But if it was aimed at the association and all its members, than I take serious offence. My defence to the two comments made is this i.e. it is obvious that they do not have the slightest inclination as to the aim and objectives of the association. Neither are they members of the association nor had attended the AGM where members spoke about what all they aspire the association to be.

Let me tell the two retired military officers that our members are neither misfit, nor are we inclined towards the opposition. During my opening speech at the AGM, I had specifically said that the association wants to “help built a true Malaysian nation that is based on the foundation of unity, care and love for one another, setting aside race and religious sentiments”. I further went on to say that in dealing with the authorities of the government over issues of public and national interest, “we will maintain a ‘gentlemen posture’ and non confrontational”. I had also categorically stated that the association “will maintain a non partisan role void of partisan politics”. We will deal with issues that are plaguing the nation today, and there are countless. We will state our position on issues of public concern, and we leave it to the authorities to act. We will join other NGOs and associations that have raised and voiced similar concerns.

Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan is unique in that its members are comprised of retired military and police officers at this preliminary stage i.e. I believe the only association of this kind. Our Constitution has been design to include at various stages, military/police lower ranks and even retired members of the civil service; this in keeping with the meaning of the word ‘Patriot’ found in the official name of the association. The association is therefore not a military/police veteran association as some had thought it to be.

Being an association that is dedicated towards assisting the government in nation building and caring for its people, the road ahead will be long and tedious, especially for an association like us that wants to maintain a non partisan role void of partisan politics. This I think will be our biggest challenge.

ROYAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY, AND MORE ROYAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY

The Home Minister was reported to have said that the government is willing to consider a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) over the Memali incident in Baling, Kedah that occurred some 30 years ago, that saw 18 people killed including 4 policemen. I just wonder why is there a sudden rise in the interest of setting RCI’s for incidents that had occurred several decades ago, and at a time when Tun Mahathir was the Prime Minister. Earlier, an RCI has convened to inquire into the Forex losses by Bank Negara Malaysia that was also at the time when Tun Mahathir was the Prime Minister.

Now, do we not see an insidious pattern by the incumbent government to disparage the good name of Tun Mahathir, shame and silence him for his ceaseless challenge towards the Najib regime? Do you not see that such action is to divert the attention of the rakyat to the much larger issues that are affecting the nation, the mother of all scandals i.e. the 1MDB scandal and the mounting debts caused by an irresponsible, greedy and thieving national leader? What reasonable and justifiable reason can the Home Minister offer for his willingness to consider a RCI for the Memali incident other than the aforesaid reason?

Malaysians are already disgusted at the failure of the government to take measures to reduce the heightening costs of living. Many forms of businesses are gradually losing their clientele and are on the brink of ceasing their businesses. Graduates in the thousands are unemployed, and see a bleak future ahead of them. Even government retirees are not spared from losing some of their benefits i.e. medicines are no provided free at government hospitals. What does this mean? But the government says that the economy is doing well; maintaining high economic growth. Yet our ringgit that was once a most stable currency in the region is now losing its value, even against regional currencies. What more lies can our leaders offer to the rakyat, and for how long more can they sustain such lies?

Will there be many more RCIs to further place a cap on the resurgence of Tun Mahathir as a national leader that wants to see the final eviction of Najib from his ‘throne’? I am not surprise the government will also consider a RCI on the construction of the Petronas Twin Tower that they will claim as wasteful spending of public money. Or a RCI on the construction of Putrajaya that they say is also wasteful spending of public money.

Well, Tun Mahathir was Prime Minister for 22 years, and I think the Najib regime can find many more cases of wasteful spending that may warrant a RCI.
